Funded Foot Care for People with Diabetes
If you have diabetes, caring for your feet is essential — even small problems like dry skin or calluses can lead to serious complications. At Solecare, we’re part of the Canterbury Diabetic Foot Ulcer Prevention Programme, funded by Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora, offering funded podiatry care to eligible people living with diabetes. ✅ Who Is Eligible?
You may qualify for four fully funded podiatry visits per year if you:
Are enrolled with a general practice in the Canterbury regionHave diabetesHave been referred by your GP or diabetes nurse, andMeet at least one of the following clinical risk criteria:
Previous foot ulcer or lower limb amputationLoss of protective sensation (confirmed using a 10g monofilament or vibration test)Peripheral arterial disease (e.g. weak or absent foot pulses, reduced ABPI or toe pressure, tissue loss etc) And one of the following Significant foot deformity** (e.g. Charcot foot, bunions, claw toes, flat feet)Very thick dystrophic toenails, involuted nails, mycotic nailsCultural, social or disability-related factors that place you at higher risk of complications
Note: You must be referred into the scheme by a registered health professional. 🩺 What’s Covered?
The funded service provides professional foot care and support aimed at reducing the risk of ulcers and amputations. It includes:
* A full foot health and risk assessment* Vascular and sensory testing* Diabetes-specific education and prevention advice* Nail and skin care (when clinically necessary)* Clinical documentation and feedback to your GP* Four visits per year (initial + 3 follow-ups)
What’s not included: Routine nail care for low-risk patients, footwear advice, orthotics, and treatment of non-diabetes-related issues are not part of the funded programme, but can be accessed privately.

📞 How Do I Get Referred?
Just ask your GP or diabetes nurse to send a referral to Solecare under the **Canterbury Diabetic Foot Ulcer Prevention Programme**. Once received and accepted, we’ll contact you directly to arrange your appointment.

You are most welcome to bring a family/Whanau support/friend with you to the appointment. Solecare Podiatry respects everybody's cultural needs and sensitivities and will work with you to provide the best care and outcome. We welcome your feedback about our service. We will facilitate support from whānau/hapu/iwi, kuia/kaumatua, rongoa practitioners, spiritual advisors, Māori staff and others as appropriate for Māori accessing our services. Please note that funding for diabetic foot care is very limited across New Zealand and we are not funded for missed appointments. Our standard terms apply when cancelling or rescheduling an appointment, please give us 24 hours notice. Under the terms of the scheme, we reserve the right to discharge people who have missed two appointments. Unfortunately, some people with diabetes will not meet the criteria for the funded scheme and will have to fund their own foot care. Our fees are very competitive and appointments are thorough. Depending on circumstances, some people may be able to get financial assistance from WINZ for ongoing care, we are happy to provide written quotes to assist with any application.
